Preclinical Imaging

Node PI

Core-Team: Markus Mitterhauser, Thomas Helbich
Speaker: Markus Mitterhauser

The Preclinical Imaging (PI) node bridges the gap between experimental strategies and clinical application of innovative novel imaging biomarkers and/or methods.

The main research areas of this node are based on a close interaction with the respective departments of MedUni Vienna. At present, the PI node focuses on imaging in:

  • Oncology (angiogenesis, hypoxia, proliferation, metabolism, cell death)
  • Cardiovascular research (atherosclerosis, vulnerable plaques, myocardial perfusion/ischaemia)
  • Neurology (Psychiatry, Neuro-Oncology, Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease)
  • Musculoskeletal research (arthritis, pain, inflammation)

The activities of the PI node are closely related to the Preclinical Imaging Laboratory (PIL). The PIL focuses on the application of sophisticated imaging techniques in experimental systems and small experimental animals. The panel of available techniques include micro-MR, micro-CT, micro-SPECT, micro-PET, micro-ultrasound and various optical imaging procedures (bioluminescence, fluorescence) as well as options for the combination of these methods (hybrid technologies). Complimentary, for precise induction of tissue and organ alterations, a dedicated small animal irradiation device is available. The PIL is closely and intensely cooperating with the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image guided Therapy in order to instantly exploit the preclinical research into clinical applications.
